Accommodations
We have hotel rooms reserved in three locations close to MIT, as well as MIT dormitory rooms. In addition, there are rooms available at the Marriott, which is the closest hotel to the MIT Media Lab, though we were not able to arrange for a group rate (explained below). Please look at the map which shows the location of the Media Lab, hotels, and subway stops. You will note that the Sheraton Commander and Harvard Square hotel are 2 subway stops from the lab, while the Royal Sonesta has a free shuttle service to Kendall Square. The list of hotels and reservation arrangements follows:

  1. Marriott Hotel:

    To date, Mariott has rooms available, but cannot offer us a conference rate. If people wish to use the Marriott, which is directly adjacent to the MIT campus, they can book directly. Marriott recommends reserving by April. Rooms are held via credit card and can be cancelled without charge up until 6:00 PM the day of arrival. Single or double occupancy is $189.00
  2. Royal Sonesta Hotel:

    $159.00 (plus 9.7% tax) for singles and doubles
    $20.00 charge for each additional person if 3 or 4 people share a room

    Reservation System: Each person must call their reservation directly to the hotel and identify him- or herself as part of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition in order to receive the discounted group rate. Reservations are held for only one night without occupancy.

    Cut-off date for reservations: 6/30/97
    After this date, requests will be accepted on a space only basis and the rate may increase

  3. Harvard Square Hotel:

    $130.00 (plus 9.7% tax) for singles and doubles. (Rooms come with either a queen sized bed or two double beds.)

    Reservation System: Each person must use the identification code GC-SMPC and call their reservation directly to the hotel. Reservations are secured via each individual's credit card.

    Cut-off date for reservations: 7/9/97
    After this date, requests will be accepted on a space only basis and the rate may increase.

    Check out: 12:00 PM (noon)
  4. Sheraton Commander:

    $155.00 (plus 9.7% tax) for singles
    $165.00 (plus 9.7% tax) for doubles

    Reservation System: Each person must use the identification SMPC and call their reservation directly to the hotel. Reservations are secured via each individual's credit card.

    After this date, requests will be accepted on a space only basis and the rate may increase.
    Check in: 3:00 PM
    Check out: 1:00 PM
  5. MIT Dormitory Rooms:
    $38.00 to $58.00. Rate will vary depending upon the dormitory that is available and single or double occupancy. Reserving a dorm room is done via the registration form. Your reservation will not be held until a checque is received. The cut-off date for dorm room reservations is July 1, 1997. We will be unable to refund dorm reservations after July 9, 1997.
Each hotel is a short train ride (2 stops) or, in one case, a free shuttle bus away. In addition to our map of hotels, you may also want to look at some other maps of Cambridge.

Also, MacWorld is holding its annual extravaganza Monday August 4 through Thursday August 7. People should plan well ahead if they plan to stay for this event, as the availability of accommodations will be scarce.
