I agree with what John said, you can also think about it this way:
Tableread/tablewrite and all of the ft* opcodes are the low level interface
to function tables - they provide the complete interface to tables. Anything
operating on tables can be implemented in terms of these opcodes (I'm
actually working on an implementation which does just that.)
On the other hand, Oscil et al. can be thought of as handy helper opcodes
which depend on and extend the basic function table behavior.
