I'm not running 7.0, but I am running a pretty recent kernel:
% uname -a
Linux 2.2.17 #1 Sat Nov 4 16:20:06 PST 2000 i686 unknown
And I just tested this functionality several times and it worked OK.
However, it looks like at least some of the Redhat 7.0's are actually
2.2.16, from a quick Google search, so maybe my kernel is more recent
than yours -- do a uname -a above and let me know.
Aside from kernel issues, the other possibility could be that you're
running esd by default, type
% ps -ef | grep esd
and if you see:
% ps -ef | grep esd
root 1163 1131 0 17:32 pts/2 00:00:00 esd
lazzaro 1165 905 0 17:32 pts/1 00:00:00 grep esd
You probably enabled esd to run by default at setup (it's an option
at setup time). However, esd is incompatible with sfront in -playback
mode too, so I'd be surprised if it were running.
Did the system ever come back, or did you need to hard boot it? I
assume timesync when not in root (which wouldn't have the 5.0 seconds
aspect) works OK?
