I take it that you're speaking of saolc, the reference software. There
is no requirement for any particular sound-file format support in
the SAOL standard itself, since many MPEG-4 applications won't actually
talk to sound files (the oft-cited "MPEG-4 radio"). There's a format
for packing samples into the bitstream as blocks of 16-bit or 32-bit
data, but not in the AIFF or WAVE formats.
saolc supports AIFF for convenience; if someone would like to contribute
a public patch to add WAVE file support, I would be happy to add it.
I will post a note about the future development of saolc when I announce
v. 1.0 early next week.
