Linux GUI System Survey (Cross-Post)

Hello Everyone,

Please forgive my cross-post here, but I am trying to find a wide cross
section of people who are using Linux as their Operating System of
choice for music. This includes anything from Music Notation,
Algorithmic Composition, Performance, Sequencing, and/or Synthesis.

I have been trying to setup a system for myself based around Linux that
allows for the performance of the above tasks. Everything that I have
done so far has been in using Gnome. In the past year, I have had some
weird problems that I wonder might be caused by the use of Gnome. I have
not tried to use KDE, yet, as I thought it would cause more trouble to
run with both systems (Gnome and KDE) installed at the same time.

The problems that I have had, I have not been able to track down the
causes, so I really don't know if the problem lies with Gnome. All the
reports that I have found on the net claim that KDE is much more stable
that Gnome, so I wanted to reinstall everything fresh and try KDE. Also,
from looking at the software availbal for KDE, it looks like there is
many other types of programs there as well (when compared to Gnome).

Basically, I have been running Mandrake 8.0 using all the components (ie
Gnome, Sawfish, etc.) that ship with the CD images downloaded off their
site.

I am curious what installations others are using, and what
configurations (ie Gnome or KDE) are you using.

Thanks for the help, I have set up this message to reply back to me, and
I will be more than happy to share all the results with anyone who would
like this information. (As this is off-topic for these lists, I didn't
want a flood of messages going out, especially with the cross-posts.)

Mike
