Hello. I'm a new member on this mailing list.

I'm 29 years age male person, studying mathematics at University of
Tampere, in Tampere in Finland. I have programmed and still I'm
programming audio programs for making music. Currently I'm learning
how to write interactive audio programs with working graphical user
interface. My plan is to use Saol "as is" in the program for making
effects and generating sounds.

I have not used Saol at all but I have spend some time to look for how it
works. My only experience with Csound/Saol type programs were from last
summer when I partially remixed one song for my own enjoyment. I wrote
a simple C program to support the track and beat positioning of the loop
audio files but the actual computation were done with Csound. I never
finished the remix because it were too difficult to edit the C program,
compile it and run Csound for getting results. I decided to look for
an interactive program similar to Samplitude where user may arrange
audio files to tracks and set an amplitude envelopes over them.

I feel Saol type systems are useful for audio wave processing but the
score part should be done interactively unless something very special
is done.

I have spend quite much time in looking for proper compressor, limiter,
expander, noise gate, noiseshaping ditherer, etc. One compressor/limiter
code available for Csound is within the CEC software. But as with other
similar codes, I'm always in doubt if the code works as a good compressor/
limiter.

I have filter parameters for noiseshaping ditherer taken from one research
article and I have some explanations on compressors if you would like to
look at them. One major difference between the compressors in most of the
programs and the one used at Lucasfilm (Moorer) is that Moorer's program
divides the audio to several parts with respect to frequency and process each
of them separately with the "compressor". So, I'm not at all sure what kind
of proper compressor and limiter should look a like. I have the filter
parameters available for the Moorer's system if you don't mind to look at
them. I don't understand these Attack and Release things of compressor at
all but would like to have an explanation on them, please.

In a few days I will have test samples available containg the samples
processed with a couple of commercial compressors. I hope I then figure
out what the A and R practically means.

In future, I would like to see Saol example implementation distributed
in a package containing a huge collection of opcodes.

Sincerely Yours,

Juhana
