I know two types of these multiband compressors:

(i) Moorer's compressor uses fixed set of four bands which are overlapping;
however, it is not the kind of overlapping seen in the FFT but more
carefully planned (those four bands are made by combining 16 FFT bands).

(ii) Sound Forge (or Cool Edit?) has a compressor with four bands made
by simple band-pass filters; it is suggested that the bands doesn't overlap;
this looks like a quick hack with respect to Moorer's system.

Moorer's system was used in the movie Amadeus as a noise gate; 256
bands got from FFT were used directly, not the four band system which
is also described in the paper.
