The Moorer system probably tries to achieve some specific psycho-acoustical
effect, probably increasing the perceived loudness of the signal without
increasing the dynamics of the signal at the same time. The compressors used
in common sound editors tend to be less specialized and, alas, less well
designed. But of course the usage of these compressors is quite different:
Cool Edit is primarily used for mutilating sound for 'cool' effects,
research compressors are used for more specific needs, such as noise removal
or well planned psycho-acoustical enhancement...
