[ANNOUNCE] saolc v. 1.0 (FDIS release) available

From: Eric Scheirer (eds@media.mit.edu)
Date: Tue Jun 29 1999 - 15:37:02 EDT

Greetings,

I am pleased to announce the release of a new version of saolc,
which brings us to version 1.0. This version is compliant with
all of the normative SAOL parts of the Structured Audio FDIS,
as far as I have been able to test.

Executables (currently only SGI and Windows) as well as complete
source code are available from the SA home page. This version
also includes a lengthy documentation (40 pp) that describes in
excruciating detail how all of saolc works. The SA home page
remains at http://sound.media.mit.edu/mpeg4.

All of the code in this release is in the public domain, and you are
welcome to use it for any purpose you like.

With this release, the main development of saolc will cease at the
Media Lab. I will do whatever patching proves necessary over
the next two weeks, and then ship the ISO-copyright code to
ISO. At that point, the reference software is completely frozen
and cannot even be debugged without passing official
corrigenda. So please test the software and help me find bugs
until this time!

If others in the community wish to contribute patches and improvements
to saolc, I will be happy to apply the patches and maintain the
software in the Linux model. I would also be happy to host
executables for other platforms if people can compile them for
me.

The test bitstreams on the website have been re-encoded to
be compliant to the FDIS. This means that they won't work with
the old software anymore, and similarly the new software will
not parse old bitstreams. Now that the draft is frozen, this won't
be a problem again.

-----

I would like to include a page of pointers to other SA projects on
the SA home page. If you are working on an SA project and
can announce it to the community, please send me a pointer
to your web page and a brief description of what the project is
about. This is mostly for marketing purposes and doesn't
commit you to public release of the software -- I want to be able
to show off how much buy-in is already occurring for the SA tools.
Please send me an email even if I already know about your
project, so I can use that as confirmation that you're willing
to be linked.

Very best to all,

 -- Eric
